Mastering the Art of Shoe Tying
A Skill Worth Teaching
Let’s talk about a life skill that’s becoming somewhat of a “lost art”: tying shoes. With the rise in popularity of Velcro and slip-on sneakers, many kids are learning to tie laces later than previous generations. But what happens when your child outgrows their Velcro shoes or needs to wear laced shoes for sports or other activities? Learning to tie their shoes not only builds independence but also boosts confidence and ensures safety.
Teaching a child to tie their own shoes might sound like a daunting task, but there are methods out there that make it easier for little hands to manage. Plus, mastering this skill fosters patience, perseverance, and pride in doing things independently.
Ready to get started? Follow these simple, kid-friendly steps below to help make shoe-tying a breeze for your child. Before you know it, they’ll be lacing up with confidence!
Make an “X”
Go under the “bridge”
Pull tight
Make another “X”
Go under the “bridge”
Leave a small hole
Follow your laces back into the hole the way they came out to make a loop. Like a train on a track “choo choo”
Repeat for the other lace
Now pull your loops down and tight!
