Weighted and Compression Products
Why Choose Weighted and Compression Products?
Weighted blankets and compression products provide proprioceptive input to the body. Essentially, proprioception can provide a calming effect through improving body awareness, sensory processing, and providing a sense of security.
Important Note for Parents: These products are typically recommended for children age 4 and older. However, it’s crucial to remember that every child is unique. Always consult with your pediatrician or occupational therapist to determine whether these products are appropriate for your child’s individual needs. In regard to wear time, a general rule of thumb is to use weighted products for intervals of 15-30 minutes with breaks in between. Consult with your child’s OT or pediatrician for individualized wear schedules.
How to Choose the Right Product:
When selecting a weighted product, the weight should generally be about 10% of your child’s body weight. For example, if your child weighs 50 pounds, a 5-pound weighted blanket or vest would be ideal. Be sure to refer to a reliable source or consult your healthcare provider to find the most appropriate weight for your child.
